The story in four figures

Each figure is one chapter of the story. Paint them one evening at a time, and tell that part of the Ramayana while you work.

1. Ram, the hero of light

Prince Ram is sent into the forest for fourteen years and goes without complaint, because keeping a promise matters more than a throne. His bow and quiver are big, simple shapes, great for younger painters.

Painting tip: Ram is often shown with blue skin. Mix blue with a little white for a soft sky blue, and save the gold (yellow + a touch of brown) for his bow.

2. Sita, grace and courage

Sita follows Ram into the forest, and when Ravan carries her away to Lanka, she never gives up hope. Her figure holds two lotuses, with a little deer beside her: the golden deer that starts the whole adventure.

Painting tip: red + white makes lotus pink. Try a deep red sari with gold borders, and paint the deer a warm brown (red + yellow + a touch of black).

3. Hanuman, the mighty helper

Hanuman leaps across the ocean to find Sita and brings Ram the news that she is safe. He's the hero kids love most: brave, loyal and a little bit mischievous.

Painting tip: mix red and yellow for Hanuman's classic orange, and give his mace a shiny gold. A dot of white in each eye makes him come alive.

4. Ravan, the ten-headed king

Every great story needs a great villain. Ravan is clever and powerful, and his defeat is the victory of light over darkness that Diwali celebrates. Our Ravan is all smiles, so he's more fun than scary.

Painting tip: paint all ten faces one base color first, let them dry, then give each face its own expression. Kids love making every head different.

How the kit works

The four unpainted 3D-printed Ramayana figurines as they arrive, ready to paint

  • What arrives: each figure is a smooth, blank, 3D-printed figurine, fully assembled, with no glue and no prep.
  • Everything's included: 6 acrylic paints (white, black, brown, red, blue, yellow), 2 brushes and a mixing palette with each figure.
  • Time: about 2 hours per figure, an easy one-evening project.
  • Ages: 6–12, and grown-ups tend to join in.

Make it a Diwali tradition

Paint one figure each evening in the days before Diwali, and tell that part of the story as you go. On Diwali night, set all four beside your diyas and rangoli, and bring them out again every year.
